Just Accepted Student Willemina Baxley
Majoring in Merchandise Product Development
High School Senior Willemina Baxley is passionate about fashion. In her entrance project, she outlined a plan to make designer footwear styles accessible to college-aged students. Substituting microfiber for leather would bring the price point down, she explained. The eighteen year old will study Merchandise Product Development at the Los Angeles campus beginning July 2012.
Tell us a bit about yourself. I have always loved fashion and clothes.
To be able to learn it at the college level sounds amazing! I am actually excited to start school, which hasn’t always been the case. I love fashion, music, and sports.
What are your proudest accomplishments so far? I am most excited so far to get accepted into FIDM.
What made FIDM right for you? I like the idea of having a job in the fashion industry. It is so nice that they help students pursue their fashion career goals. Also the idea of being able to study and learn about fashion every day in my classes sounds dreamy. I want to be able to make my own adjustments to outfits and certain clothes, so being able to learn more about fashion will be awesome! I also like participating in hands-on activities and doing projects. Having this built into the curriculum will be a great way to learn.
Who is your Admissions Advisor? Kristen Chocek. She is so sweet! She has helped me with so much, and was there for me whenever I needed it! I couldn't have done it without her. Could not have been set up with a better Advisor!
Describe your entrance project: I came up with five designer shoe styles I love and redesigned them for college-aged students. I explained in my project that this would require making them less expensive by using microfiber instead of leather, and putting my own twist on them. I loved doing the project and am excited to do more projects like this at FIDM.
What do you expect to learn at FIDM? I am excited to learn about
new trends, how to produce new products, and how to build a brand.
I expect to learn a tremendous amount about the fashion industry
at FIDM!
